Artist Studio

Jo Hill is a textile artist and designer based in the Staffordshire countryside. She makes luxury textile wall hangings, cushions, lampshades and chairs, all inspired by British wildlife. Jo came to us looking for a custom-designed cedar building to use as her new studio and workshop. Due to the nature of her work, it was important for the studio to let in as much natural light as possible. To do this we glazed the building across the full south-facing length, leaving enough space underneath for the workbenches to be fitted against the wall. To keep the direct sun off, we fitted a large overhang above the windows, helping to keep the studio at a comfortable temperature during the summer months. We also fitted opening windows at each end to allow some airflow through the building when required. To keep the studio warm during the winter we fitted a high level of insulation into the floor, walls and ceiling. This insulation creates a comfortable working environment and eliminates the need for additional heating – helping to keep running costs low for Jo.
